The nursing service for the United States Army and provides qualified nursing staff in support of the Department of Defense medical plans. This corps is composed only of Registered Nurses (RN). The Army Medical Department of the US Army — known as the AMEDD — comprises the Army's six medical Special Branches (or "corps"). It was established as the "Army Hospital" in July 1775 to coordinate the medical care required by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The AMEDD is led by the Surgeon General of the US Army, a lieutenant general. The AMEDD is the US Army's healthcare organization, not a US Army command. The AMEDD is found in all three components of the Army: the Active Army, the US Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard. Its headquarters are at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, which hosts the AMEDD Center and School. Equal numbers of AMEDD senior leaders can be found in Washington DC, divided between the Pentagon and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC). The Academy of Health Sciences, under the Army Medical Department Center & School, provides training to the officers and enlisted soldiers of the AMEDD.
